The Mobile Crane is one of the many drivable Vehicles in Teardown. It's first appearance is in Lee Chemicals.
Design[]
The Mobile Crane does not appear to be based on any vehicle.
Starting from the bottom the machine has a very similar chassis to the Excavator, but with lots of visible axles and smaller wheels. The fenders and 10 wheels are shared by the two. All of the axles lead back to a central block which connects to the main body from the bottom.
The main body is quite long and has a lot more visible features compared to the Excavator. On the right side of the front is the extremely square cab with lots of windows. The cab has a rack on it's roof and a pair of small headlights below the front glass. The left side of the front appears to be built incorrectly as there is a large gap instead of body panels. Due to this gap, several pieces of a ladder are floating in mid-air but are not affected by physics. Striking them with the Sledge will "wake them up".
Past the ladder are metal gates, three on the left side and one on the right side. These gates terminate at the rear of the main body where a pair of large oxygen tank-like counterweights sit. On the bottom of these counterweights are small taillights. Right in the middle of the body is the most noticeable feature: the large red arm. It appears to have writing on it's side, but this could just be a decal. On the very end of the arm is a large heavy-metal hook on a rope, which swings around an absurd amount. The arm can be moved up and down using LMB and RMB, and the hook can be engaged using SPACE(default input). The Mobile Crane has an exhaust pipe right behind the crane arm. The Mobile Crane is painted in a orangish-yellow color with a red arm and grey accents.
Performance[]
The Mobile Crane is not exactly a "construction" vehicle, rather a utility. Even though it's sole purpose is to transport heavy loads, it is marginally better at destroying buildings, due to several qualities of the machine that give it this ability. The first and most powerful "weapon" of the crane is the arm, the tip of which cannot be destroyed. This allows for quick destruction of buildings without sustaining any damage, however the rest of the arm's durability is much worse, being weaker than that of the Excavator. One must also take care not to use the rest of the arm, as it quickly fails under constant usage.
In the case that the crane's arm is destroyed, the rest of the machine remains. Unlike the arm, the difference in durability between other construction vehicles and the crane's body is negligible. It has a large amount of mass within it, enabling it to crash through buildings without sustaining critical damage. The vehicle's ground clearance is not as spectacular, however. It has exposed axles and low ground clearance, increasing the chance of getting stuck when driving over debris. This offroad weakness does not mix well with the machine's slow speed, even if it has good torque.
Finally, in the case that one would use the crane to transport items, it is not very good at doing that. This is due to the metal piece that hangs on a rope infront on front of the arm, the hook. Since it is suspended from a rope, the hook likes to swing very much. This can lead to large objects swinging too much and causing damage to the arm or themselves, hurting the flow of a mission. Planks are recommended to keep items in place but doing such a thing requires a large amount of them. The crane also cannot pick up heavy items such as containers, as they are too heavy and may ruin the balance of the machine while also doing more damage when they swing.
