The history of Teardown begins as early as 2017.

2017[]

The first posts on Dennis Gustafsson's Twitter account was about a rendering & physics engine with raytracing.

2018[]

In 2018, the rendering engine took shape, and voxel-based destruction was teased in June.

January - May[]

In January, Gustafsson tested his engine with a model of a steam train.[1]. In spring of that year, he rewrote the engine[2], with depth of field[3] and less noise. More light types were added, all in real time[4].

June[]

In June, Gustafsson tweeted that he was having one of his "destructive phases", as he showed a video of a building being destroyed by spheres. Shortly after, he added a level editor, sound and MagicaVoxel imports to his engine.[5]

August - December[]

In August, Gustafsson rewrote the engine to better handle debris, and the lighting system to incorporate voxels. Emil Bengtsson was also introduced as a developer, working on a harbour scene. Early experiments with volumetric fog were shown[6].

In October, "explosives" were added to the game, which created massive holes. It was timed, similar to the Bomb. The first animations were added, shadowy figures with lights on their head[7]. These figures were also used for AI pathfinding using A*. Material properties were showcased on Halloween of that year[8].

In November, the "peagun" was made "bigger", now spawning explosives, marking the addition of the rocket. In December, plastic joints were added, simulating deformation of wooden structures[9].

2019[]

Emil Bengtsson first posted about Teardown in January of this year. Vehicles were added in March.

January[]

The first Teardown-related post was on 15 January, where buoyancy was demonstrated[10]. This was followed by experiments into blue noise[11], and acoustic noise[12]. The sledge was the first modelled tool shown.

March[]

On the first of March, 2 vehicles were showcased, the Dump Truck and the Van. They were prototypes, and had cylinders for wheels. Later that month, a repair tool was introduced, but was also used for primitive structures. THe oldest known surviving sound was introduced with the post. A health system was added, along with spiders[13](this was removed in early access).

June & August - December[]

Volumetric lighting was showcased in June[14]. In August, a warehouse was showcased, reminiscent of that of Lee Chemicals[15], which was mostly shown in late August[16] along with plastic joints used for metal.

In September, the gun was introduced, along with rope and a UI(different font)[17]. Voxel recolouring was showcased with the addition of a spraycan[18].

In October, the game was revealed as Teardown, a heist game. The Front Loader introduced, [19], the oldest surviving vehicle model, and with voxel tyres. More vehicles were added, the Single-unit truck(as Lee Bros), a Station Wagon and the Taskmaster 4WD[20]. In November, the American Semi was introduced[21]. Later, the Shotgun and Security Chopper were introduced[22].

On 12 December, fire spreading was introduced. On the 20th, a safe was shown being stolen along with an updated Dump Truck[23], but no escape vehicle was present.

2020[]

In 2020, Teardown was released into early access after 3 years of development.

Janaury - September[]

A TV was shown, with the image used as a light source[24]. The water shader was rewritten with a demo at Hollowrock Island(then unnamed)[25], along with rain[26].

On February, the amount of vehicles increased to 24, with a vehicle showcasing a white Defender and the Industrual Forklift. 3 new maps were revealed, Evertides Mall[27], Mr Amanatides' fish processing plant[28] and Löckelle wrecking company[29].

On March, scripting support was added[30]. Vehicle sounds were reworked, and drifting particle effects were added along with the Crownzygot XVC[31].

In April, sound effects were reworked[32]. And in May, some building that would be used in Frustrum were revealed. The Extinguisher was finally confirmed after being teased[33].

In June, the Blowtorch was the last tool to be confirmed[34]. The Excavator was revealed along with a new map[35].

In July, West Point Marina was revealed[36]. In August, the UI font was changed to Lato[37]. Bad weather was also showcased. On 27 August, the first trailer was released, showcasing changes to Hollowrock Island(some houses were replaced with a BluePop gym, later BlueTide). The next day, the first early access video was released by 2kliksphilip, with a Mobile Crane. The Villa Gordon racetrack was showcased[38].

The track was updated in September[39].

15 - 29 October[]

On 15 October, there was a video spelling out "29", along with a Big Fishing Boat bearing the name "October". The next day, a second trailer released, confirming the release date as 29 October. Early modding capabilities were demonstrated[40]. On 29 October, Teardown was released into early access.

November - December[]

The first confirmed update was a mod loader for the game, along with a racing game.

2021[]

May[]

Teardown's second biggest update came this year, with Evertides Mall being the biggest.

October 29th[]

Teardown turns one year old and with it Part 2 is announced.

December 2nd[]

Teardown's biggest update this year, As Part 2 is released.
